The Channel, Dover

In the morning we had a stiff double reefed topsail SSE breeze. We double To reduce the surface area exposed to the wind.reefed the topsails. At dawn we saw the Cape of Calais to the SSW, approximately 3 miles away. In the forenoon there was a stiff reefed topsail breeze coming from the SSE and SE by S with good weather. We reefed the topsails. At noon, Dover was situated to the NW by N. We saw several ships lying with us and Captain Boef was sailing ahead of us. During the afternoon watch and dog watches there was a double reefed topsail breeze coming from the SSE with a cloudy sky.  In the evening Dover was to the NNW ½ N of us and we made for SW. From then, the sky was overcast and cloudy with rain and a double reefed topsail breeze. When the middle watch was over the lighthouse of Winchelsea was situated to the N by W. The situation remained like this until morning.
