First mate’s logbook

It was calm during the morning and forenoon. At dawn we put out our boat and rigged it up, deciding to sent it to the river to see what kind of river it was, and also to put the ship in order with ropes and foot ropes. During the forenoon the boat left the ship, and we took in our daily rope and tied it back to the anchor; the foot rope part of it we tied below it. We cleaned under there and put the daily anchor away from the bow and tied the buoy ropes. Today a male slave passed away, No.27. Later during the dog watches we had good weather and a gentle breeze from NE. At night we had a squally sky until the morning.
