N. 24

A male slave complained about pain on the chest on the 24th of this month. He had trouble breathing. I did not find a fever, but I gave him a bleeding of about ten ounces. I laid a geroon with the resin and cumin plaster and I put an oil with clove and mint on his painful side. I also gave him of the eclegma (prescription 11) to lick from as well as a boiled extract (prescription 8).

Prescription 11: To suck from in cases of cough, pleurisy, shortness of breath

R/ Fac eclegma [make an eglegma: a syrup on licorice root sucked for the relief of cough]

• Balzamum peruvianum [balsam from Peru; weak antiseptic]: ʒ I
• Oleum anisi [anise oil]: gutta, plural guttaedropguttae XX
• Mel guinee [honey from Guinea]
• Sijrupus altheae [common marshmellow syrup]: ℥ II

• ʒ drachma = 3 scruple, so approximately 4 g
• ℥ uncia = ounce = 8 drachmae, so approximately 31 g

Prescription 8: to drink in cases of heavy thirst, hot fevers and of all burning diseases

• Herba altheae [agrimony]

• Cornu cervi rasparati [grated cornu-cervi]: manupulum unam
