First mate’s logbook

In the morning and the forenoon the wind was a gentle breeze from SSW to SW by S. Thick clouds drifted across the sky. We cleaned on the ‘tween decks and on the quarterdeck and we fumigated the decks with incense and juniper. Our compound estimated course and covered distance of the last 24 hours was SE 9 miles in the afternoon. We came to the estimated latitude of 3º53’ and longitude 19º26’ and found a latitude of 4º2’. In the afternoon the wind was a gentle breeze from SW. Clouds were drifting overhead. During the dog watches and the first watch the wind came from S to SSW. After 2 The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells.glasses in the dog watches had run out we came about the WSW topsail breeze and after 4 glasses had run out in the first watch we came about SE. Later at night drifting clouds and a gentle breeze until the morning.
