Auctioneer’s report

I, the undersigned Abraham Wijs, auctioneer, declare to owe the honorable lords directors of the Commercie Compagnie in Middelburg, Zeeland, the sum of ƒ 34.348:8:0. This is the result of the balance of the transactional account made with captain Jan Menkenveld, commander of the ship the Unity, of the public auction of 142 African slaves, men, women, boys and girls, on July 21 and 22 1762.

  • the net profit from abovementioned slaves, amounting to ƒ 35.265:0:0
  • minus 2,5 % of taxes, ƒ 881:12:0

  • minus spreading the auction catalogs  ƒ 25:0:0
  • as well as drumming four times ƒ 10:0:0

remains the sum of ƒ 34.348:8:0

which sum of thirty-four thousand three hundred and forty-eight guilders and eight shillings of Dutch currency in promissory notes I, the undersigned, promise to send with the first ship that will depart for Amsterdam to the aforementioned honorable lords directors of the Commercie Compagnie in Middelburg, Zeeland. The second payment of promissory notes will be send with the first following departing ship. Furthermore I would like to keep the third payment of promissory notes with me until further notice from the noble lords on the condition that I receive a receipt from the honorable lords directors of the Commercie Compagnie in Middelburg, Zeeland. I will be responsible for the promissory notes for one year and six months and no longer.

If within six weeks after the purchase of slaves they fall to the sleeping illness or the falling illness they can be returned to me.
