In the morning we had calm, good weather. At the start of the morning watch, when it was the beginning of the ebb tide, we raised the anchor and drifted down. At sunrise we came to a standstill at 9 feet of soft mud. In the forenoon the weather was squally with rain and sometimes a stiff breeze. At noon with the flood tide we drifted off again. We found we were in the river broadways, with the water 8 feet at ebb tide. In the afternoon we had a stiff breeze, rainy skies and wind. At flood tide there was only 11 ½ feet of water. Because of the stiff breeze we could not drift and so we were grounded. In the evening we had gentle breeze. At 7 o’clock an English a sailing vessel with three or more masts having the foremasts rigged square and the aftermast rigged fore-and-aft.barquentine passed by downriver. At the start of the first watch our captain came on board. Then during the night we had quiet, good weather till the morning.
