Plymouth, England

First mate’s logbook

In the morning it was quiet. In the forenoon the wind changed from a gentle breeze to a stiff breeze to storm with rain. We took down the topmasts and yards. At noon our anchor dragged so we dropped our best-bower; together they dragged us until we ran aground an hour before the high tide. We put out the boat to raise one or the other anchor and get further ahead, but we could not get off board with the boat because of the strong wind. In the afternoon, evening and night there was an eastern wind with a heavy storm. At the low tide we only had 2 feet of water and with the high tide 12 feet. It remained like this until the morning.
