First mate’s logbook

There was a NE gentle breeze in the morning with good weather. At sunrise we undid a sheet and the fore topsail for the negroes. We sold the deceased’s boatswain’s mate’s possessions and appointed the sailor Otto Westman as sail maker, with a salary of 20 guilders per month, received 9 baskets of rice on board. Throughout the day we had a SW by SSW gentle breeze and good weather. At night it was stormy, with thunder and lightning till morning.
