The Channel, Beachy Head

First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon the wind was a double and sometimes single reefed topsail breeze coming from SSE to SE. The sky was cloudy and there was drizzling rain. At sunrise Beachy Head was situated on the NW by W. We To reduce the surface area exposed to the wind.reefed the topsails. We saw several ships around us. At noon we estimated EnglandBeachy Head at NNE and approximately 4 miles away from us and we steered to the SW by W. During the afternoon watch and dog watches we had a stiff reefed topsail SE to ESE breeze and cloudy sky with drizzling rain. We saw several ships around us. We steered to the WSE but at the end of the afternoon we steered W by S. During the first watch and middle watch the wind increased and came from the ESE. We put the second reef in the topsails. The wind then became a stiff lower sail breeze. We reefed the topsails. The situation remained like this until morning.
