At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NW 4 miles, which comes down to the estimated north latitude of 44°34′, longitude 8°18′. We found the actual north latitude to be 44°15′, which means that we found ourselves 19’ more southerly than we thought. We gauged Cape Ortegal to be 6 miles away from us to the WSW. We also found ourselves 1°12′ or 13 miles more easterly than we thought, with an actual north longitude of 9°12′, so we steered WNW before the wind. The wind was a gentle breeze coming from the NNE. During the afternoon watch and the dog watches the wind came from the NNE to E and was an average topgallant sail breeze. We steered somewhat more to the WNW. At sunset we estimated the corner of Cape Ortegal to be SW ½ S 5 miles away from us. We saw two ships to the N and NNW. During the first watch, we had a fresh topgallant sail ESE breeze and good weather. We saw a ship in the NE. With the start of the dog watches we steered westerly. The wind was between a fresh topgallant sail breeze and a fresh topsail breeze coming from the ESE by S. The sky was cloudy until morning.
