The wind came from the SSW to W in the morning and the forenoon. There were light airs, mostly calm wind, but clouded skies. Today our fore topmast stay broke and we found a shroud in the fore rigging of which a strand had gotten loose. We put a bolt in it and split the stay and we put it back on. Our captain promoted the assistant carpenter to head carpenter and increased his pay to 30 gilders per month. At noon we estimated our covered distance and compound course of the last twenty-four hours at S by E½E 5½ miles. We concluded that our estimated north latitude was 4º9′ with a found north latitude of 4º18′. In the evening and at night we had light wind and a gentle breeze from SSW to SW. It was also calm, and we had passing clouds until the morning.
