First mate’s logbook

In the morning there was a gentle and calm NE by NNE wind. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was N by W 2 ½ miles, getting on the estimated north latitude of 8º5’, longitude 319º45’, we found north latitude to be 8º12’. We sold the goods of sailor Anthony Colombo who ran away. In the afternoon we turpentined the ship on the outside. When The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells.glasses has run out we came about ESE. During the dog watches we had rainy skies with showers and a gentle breeze. At night the wind came from NNE, NE, S, N, NW by WSW. We had squally skies with rain, a gentle breeze and also a calm, so we tacked about. It stayed the same till morning.
