On the 6th of this month a male slave complained to me about diarrhea. I found out that he had dysentery so I gave him medication to make him throw up: an emetic and a big pill (Prescription 14). Because of these medicines the diarrhea appeared to go away completely, but on the 11th it came back even stronger and looked different. I prescribed a powder (Prescription 13).

Prescription 13

R/ Misce fac pulvis ad disenteriam [mix and make a powder against dysentery], taken in during a trip

• Radix rhei tosti [root of roasted rhubarb]: ℈ II
• Nuces moscatae [nutmeg, in cases of dysentery]: ℈ ß

• ℈ scruple = 20 grain, so approximately 1.3 g
• ß = ½ of the given amount
