Return

First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon we had good weather. The wind was a double and sometimes single reefed topsail breeze. The sea was high. In the afternoon we saw a a type of sailing vessel with three or more masts having the foremasts rigged square and the aftermast rigged fore-and-aft.barque to the NE of us, lying to the S. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was N⅔W and 14½ miles which comes down to the estimated north latitude of  24°54′ , longitude 316°6′. We found the actual north latitude to be 25°2′. During the afternoon watch and dog watches there was an average reefed topsail breeze from the ENE to the ESE. The weather was good. We reeved the topsails. The weather was good at night until morning.
