First mate’s logbook

In the morning and the forenoon there was a NW reefed topsail to topsail breeze and good weather. We put up the topsails and To reduce the surface area exposed to the wind.put a reef in them. At noon the estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was E 15 ½ miles. The estimated North latitude as before, with a longitude of 359°53′ and a found north latitude of 48°37′, we steered E to N. During the afternoon watch and dog watches there was a weak Sail of which the surface area has been reduced two times in order to make the surface area smaller.double reefed topsail breeze. Also a gentle breeze [in the margin: we put a second reef in the topsails]. We had squally skies with rain and plumbed the line, but did not find any ground yet. At night there was a double reefed topsail breeze and a calm with squally, overcast skies and a W wind till morning.
