At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was N by W ⅓W and 12½ miles (NtW⅓W 12½ miles), which comes down to the estimated north latitude of 24°4′, longitude 316°14′. We found the actual north latitude to be 23°56′ and directed our compasses on 6° in the northwestern direction. During the afternoon watch and dog watches we had a double reefed topsail breeze from NNE to E by N. The weather was squally. During the night, the breeze and direction of the wind remained the same. We had good weather until morning.
