In the morning and forenoon the wind came from E by N and was a mainsail and a weak Sail of which the surface areadouble-reefed topsail breeze. We added two reefs to the topsails. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was N by W¼W 14 miles, getting on the estimated north latitude of 16°38′ , longitude 316°42′; we found north latitude to be 17°3′. We were 25′ more north than estimated. In the afternoon when 6 The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand.
