At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE 18½ miles, which comes down to the estimated 43°38′ north latitude and 349°8′ longitude. The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells.glasses had run out, one of our 3 pound canons was struck off the gun carriage and fell overboard. We had a lot of water streaming in our hold at the pumps so we’ve had to pump with only 2 pumps for the entire night. We decided to sail into the wind but we did not manage to turn the ship before the wind. We put down the main staysail and continued without any sails with a heavy NNW by NW storm and high sea, till morning.
