We had a shoreward wind in the morning. In the forenoon we bought a female slave. After 3 The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells. glasses had run out we raised anchor and set sail, as did the English ship. We had good weather throughout the rest of the day with a SW to SSW gentle topgallant sail breeze. At the start of the first watch we dropped anchor at 15 1 fathom = 6 feet (170 cm)fathoms of stiff ground. Throughout the night and till morning the weather remained good.
