First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon we had squally skies with rain and also good weather. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was N¼E 12 miles, getting on the estimated north latitude of 14°25′, longitude 317°12′. We had an ESE gentle breeze with a squally sky. During the afternoon watch, dog watches and first watch we had rain with a ESE, NE and NE by N stiff reefed topsail breeze. We put a to reefTo reduce the surface area exposed to the wind.reef in the topsails. When 5 The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells.glasses in the first watch had run out we came about SE. Then in the middle watch we had an increasing breeze to a lower sail breeze. When 4 glasses in the middle watch had run out we took down the top sails. We had squally skies and a high sea till morning.
