First mate’s logbook

In the morning there were still squalls of wind, rain, and hail. In the forenoon the breeze decreased. We Sail of which the surface area has been reduced two times in order to make the surface area smaller.double reefed the topsails. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE by E 32 miles, which comes down to the estimated 39°26′ north latitude and 342°26′ longitude. We found the actual north latitude to be 40°4′, which meant that we found ourselves 38’ or 9½ miles more northerly during the 6 days before than we had estimated. During the afternoon watch and dog watches there was an average to stiff double reefed topsail breeze from the west to the SE with a heavy sky and rain. While changing to the first watch, to reefTo reduce the surface area exposed to the wind.we reefed the topsails. At night, there was a stiff mainsail breeze from the SE to SW and again N with some stormy wind. We ran for top and tackle and changed the position of the foresail in order to slow down. We had rain until morning. We found that a barrel of bread had rotted.
