First mate’s logbook

In the morning we had good weather. With start of the high tide in the forenoon we raised the anchor, which was standing to ebb, and wound it home. We readied everything for drifting off with the low tide. In the afternoon we had a stiff breeze. With sundown we raised anchor and drifted down till below the ford where we fired 5 shots. With 6 The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells. glasses into the dog watches we anchored at 4 ½ 1 fathom = 6 feet (170 cm) fathoms. Throughout the night we had good weather, till morning.
