First mate’s logbook

In the morning the wind came from NE by E and was an average topgallant sail breeze. We had good weather. At dawn, we saw land N by E of us an estimated 6 to 7 miles away. Same weather in the forenoon. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was N by W½W 15 miles, getting on the estimated north latitude of 10º27′, longitude 319º10’ and a found north latitude of 12º42′. Then we gauged the eastern corner of the island Barbados to be NE by E 7 miles from us and the northern corner at NNE to be 7 miles from us. The estimated longitude is 317°10’. We found our location to be 2°15′ more north and 2°00′ more west, we came about ENE. During the afternoon and dog watches there was calm weather with rain. During the night the wind was NE by E by N and a weak topgallant sail breeze. The weather was good. 6 The length of the watches was measured using an hourglass filled with sand. Each watch consisted of 8 half-hour glasses, marked by bells.glasses into the first watch, we hailed an English A type of sailing vessel with three or more masts having the foremasts rigged square and the aftermast rigged fore-and-aft.barque.
