First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon there was an average to fresh topgallant sail breeze coming from the SSE to S and good weather. We added the studding sails and painted the exterior of the ship. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE by E 30 miles, which comes down to the estimated 31°26′ north latitude and 326°30′ longitude. We found the actual north latitude to be 31°24′. We continued steering as we had done before. In the afternoon we laid out the capstan and brought it to the hold. We had an average topgallant sail breeze coming from the SSE. During the evening and night there was a stiff topgallant sail breeze coming from the SSW. The weather remained good until morning.
