First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon there was a topsail breeze coming from SE by S to SSE with drifting clouds. We took of the old large topgallant sail and put up the new one. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE¼N 14 miles, which comes down to the estimated 30°26′ north latitude and 324°33′ longitude. We found the actual north latitude to be 30°19′. We steered to the NE by E. In the afternoon, evening and night the wind was a stiff topsail breeze coming from the SSE. The sky was cloudy until morning.
