In the morning and forenoon we had a calm, and good weather. We turpentined the exterior of the ship and blackened the bends. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was SE by E 5½ miles, which comes down to the estimated 29°46′ north latitude and 323°50′ longitude. We found the actual north latitude to be 29°45′. In the afternoon, there was a gentle breeze from the NE by ENE. During the dog watches we had an average to fresh topgallant sail breeze coming from the SE by S and good weather. At night there was a fresh reefed topsail breeze coming from SE by S to SSE. We To reefTo reduce the surface area exposed to the windreefed the topsails and steered NE by E. The sky was overcast, with squalls till morning.
