First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon we had showers, in the afternoon the weather was good. At the beginning of high tide we raised the mooring-bower. Our captain went to the plantation of the commander Laurens Lodewijk van Bercheijk, commandeur van DemerarijL.L. van Bergheijk in order to close our Letter bag here at this river, because the letter bag from the Essequibo RiverGuyanariver of Essequibo was already closed. Then in the evening at sunset, at the beginning of the ebb-tide, we raised the anchor and drifted down. At 9 o’clock we were grounded on the bank which lies right across the river and consists of soft muddy ground. Then we had rain through the night until morning.
