Plymouth, England

First mate’s logbook

In the morning the wind came from the SE by S. At daybreak we saw the lighthouse of the Eddystonenear the roadstead of Plymouth Meewensteen to the SE of us. We estimated the lighthouse of the Meewensteen SE of us. The wind was a SE by S stiff mainsail breeze and we had dark, squally skies. With the breaking of the day we saw the lighthouse of the Meewensteen in the S by E of us. The skies were heavy with rain. Together with our captain we decided to sail into PlymouthEngland, United Kingdom Pleijmuijde because the wind and the weather did not allow us to sail away from shore and we were drifting heavily towards shore and because the sky looked stormy everywhere. This way we kept off shore, and steered to the harbor of Pleijmuijden. We fired 4 shots for a pilot and saw 5 ships following us. At 10 o’clock we received a pilot who guided us in and at 1 o’clock we came to anchor in the East-Coffer at 3 1 fathom = 6 feet (170 cm)fathoms of mud ground. We moored the ship right away and we found several ships lying here. In the evening and the night the wind was a WNW stiff breeze until the morning.
