First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon the wind was a topgallant sail breeze coming from the SSE to S. We had good weather. We took the reefs out of the topsails and we painted the boat. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE⅓E 27½ miles, which comes down to the estimated 29°28′ north latitude and 321°46′ longitude. We found the actual north latitude to be 29°21′. We steered to the NE by E. During the afternoon watch, the dog watch, and the first watch, there was a fresh topgallant sail breeze from SW. During the middle watch we had an average topgallant sail breeze. When 3 glasses had run out, the wind changed from coming from the SW to the NW and became a topsail breeze with drizzling rain. Then the breeze became gentle, with heavy skies and drizzling rain until morning.
