The wind was a gentle topgallant sail breeze from ESE in the morning and forenoon, and the sky was squally. At noon our estimated compound course and covered distance of the last 24 hours was W½S 15 miles, with an estimated south latitude of 0º44’, longitude 357º2’7, and we found the actual south latitude to be 0º39′. We set sail for W½S still. In the afternoon the wind came from ESE to SW and we had a squally sky and gentle ESE breeze. We sailed towards the setting sun at 25º00′ NW. Through calculations we found 23º12′ NW and thus we found the deviation of the compass to be 1º48’ NW. Later at night the wind came from ESE to SE and clouds drifted overhead.
