First mate’s logbook

In the morning and forenoon the wind came from the SW to WNW and there were rain showers. We put up the fore rigging. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE¾E 25½ miles, which comes down to the estimated 28°15′ north latitude and 319°32′ longitude. We steered NE by E. We saw a snow lying next to us. In the afternoon, dog and first watches there was an average topgallant sail to stiff Sail of which the surface area has been reduced two times in order to make the surface area smaller.double reefed topsail WNW to NNE breeze. The sky was heavily clouded over and there were rain showers. We reefed the topsails and kept them like this until morning.
