First mate’s logbook

In the morning there was a NW mainsail breeze with squally skies. With the end of the morning watch we measured a depth of 70 1 fathom = 6 feet (170 cm)fathoms on soft stones with broken shells. We steered ENE. In the forenoon the wind and the weather were as before. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was E½ S, 19 miles, arriving at an estimated north latitude of 49°6′, longitude 4°42′, with a found latitude of 49°26′. We still steered ENE, and saw 2 sails today that lying to the SW. In the afternoon and dog watches there was a NW, Sail of which the surface area has been reduced two times in order to make the surface area smaller.double reefed topsail breeze and good weather. In the dog watches a ship passed us which was lying to the S or SW, measured the depth of 60 fathoms fine white and red sand with black slivers. At the start of the first watch we steered E by N. We had stiff squalls with wind and rain. With the ending of the watch we measured a depth of 55 fathoms. We had heavy squalls at night, till morning.
