First mate’s logbook

In the morning there was a stiff mainsail breeze coming from the SW with an overcast, heavy, squally sky. We sailed before the wind with only the foresail. With the start of the first watch we steered towards the NNE. In the forenoon there was a SW and SW by W wind. We experienced a heavy storm and high sea. At noon our estimated compound course and sailed distance of the last twenty-four hours was NE ¼ N 27 ½ miles, which comes down to the estimated 44°31′ north latitude and 351°16′ longitude. We converted our compasses from 12° to 17° northwesterly and steered towards the NE. The wind came from the SW to W. The sky was clouded and there was storm. We sailed before the wind with only the foresail amid high sea. At night the wind came from WNW, there was still a storm with heavy squalls of rain, hail and wind until the next morning.
