First mate’s logbook

In the morning the wind was a light and gentle breeze from SW to N. It was also stormy with thunder, lightning and rain, while the forenoon had mostly calm weather. At noon we estimated our covered distance and compound course to be Z 8 miles and we concluded the estimated north latitude of 4º13′ with the longitude the same as yesterday and a roughly actual north latitude 4º30′. In the afternoon we undid the ropes from the anchors and from the bow ropes. In the afternoon, during the dog watches and the first watch the wind varied between SW, WNW and SSW. We had light airs and calm weather but sometimes storm winds with thunder, lightning and rain: we caught 6 AumeA Dutch liquid measure of approximately 155 litersaumes of water. During the middle watch the wind came from W but was mostly calm. Clouded skies until the morning.
