First mate’s logbook

There were light NNE to NNW airs in the morning and forenoon and overall good weather. The carpenter began making the awning. We saw a lot of dirt adrift. At noon our estimated course and covered distance of the last twenty-four hours was SE 8 ½ miles. Our estimated and actual north latitude was 9°39’ and longitude 359°30’, we saw a strong swirling currents. There was a light topgallant breeze in the afternoon, evening and night and we saw a lot of dirt and greens adrift. Throughout the night we had lightning, till morning.
