De trans-Atlantische slavenhandel of driehoekshandel heeft bestaan van de 16e tot in de 19e eeuw. Tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen werden over de Atlantische Oceaan vervoerd en verkocht om als dwangarbeiders te werken op de plantages.

De Middelburgse Commercie Compagnie (MCC), opgericht in 1720, was een Nederlandse particuliere handelsonderneming. Naast handel op havens aan de Oostzee en de Middellandse Zee hield de onderneming zich bezig met driehoekshandel of trans-Atlantische slavenhandel.
